Welcome to my Blog

I am a grandmother to 4 little girls. I blog about the things I make for them, review patterns, provide tutorials on how I've dealt with techniques or problems, which I hope may help others, and give links to the (mostly) free patterns I use. Every so often, I do a 'Best of..' post listing the best free patterns I've found under specific headings - babies, girls, boys etc. Enjoy the Blog!

Baby Hats

I fell in love with the Scrappy Sunhat pattern from Jessica at Running with Scissors a good 18 months ago, when Toddler I was Baby I, only a little baby. I made her this hat for her first holiday abroad in the sun, using the smallest size pattern (16-18" head circumference, or 40-46cm). However, I can't find that I posted about this hat, so here are the details now.

Not being a super confident sewer, I wasn't sure how this would go, but I was delighted at how easy it was. In fact, because I had to finish it while we were away, most of it was hand sewn, and even so, it was easy to do. However, even easier on a machine!!

Read about how I made this and other hats below the jump.

The outer fabric and big frill were made of a cream cotton with fruits on - grapes, pears, oranges, bananas, strawberries, lemons, water melon slices etc. I love it!

The smaller frill and the lining were bright orange cotton. I made a strap which I elasticated to hold it on her head in the wind. The pattern suggests attaching both ends of the strap, but I made a little button and button hole on one end to make it a little easier to get on and off.

Baby I seemed to love it and I think she looks adorable in it.

Of course, this was a good while ago. After it no longer fitted her, it was passed to to her younger cousin, but sadly it's too small for her as well. So now, I'm making the medium size (18-20", or 46-51 cm) for these two younger ones, and it will be the largest of the three sizes, I think for the oldest. This largest one is 20-22" or 51-56 cm. The sizes do seem to work! So, many thanks to Jessica. I think we also have to give a vote of thanks to her brave son, who agreed to model the sun hat for her web site.

Since then, I've made two more hats with the same pattern, and I can verify that the middle size works just as well as the smallest size! Baby I is now a toddler, 2 and a bit years old. She needed a larger size, to go with her spots and stripes outfit. When I wrote up the Spots and Stripes post, I hadn't managed to get a snap of her wearing it, but now I have. She seems to like this as much as she did her first Scrappy Sunhat.

Though she did think it would be a good idea to do a hat swap with Grandma!

And finally, hot off the sewing machine, here's the one I made for her cousin, Baby a, who is just over 15 months old. That hasn't been tried on yet, but I'm confident it will fit her, as Toddler I's hat fits her.
